Martijn started to work in humanitarian assistance in 1987 having had his formal education at a High School of the Arts (Drama). He entered MSF-Holland on technical skills (mechanics, building) acquired through hobbies. Between 1987 and 1993 he spent a good five years in the field, predominantly in East Africa. He worked for MSF-Holland and Save the Children Fund UK in logistics, various technical and/or general co-ordination positions and as Head of Mission. In 1994 he joined the MSF-Holland HQ at Logistics Department to do special assignments on the logistics of pharmaceutical distribution programmes, major emergency logistics (Great Lakes) and participate in MSF-International studies of food aid, which he combined with a study of integrated logistics management. In 1996 Martijn became one of the technical advisors to MSF-Holland operations and in 1997 coordinator for technical support at the Logistics Department n Amsterdam. He continued his studies by undertaking a MBA in the late 1990s. From March 2001, Martijn was Head of Logistics in MSF-Holland, a/o responsible for its international procurement activity (growing to 32 million Euro per year in 2005) and technical (project) support. He was also the supervisor of the MSF-International Logistics Centre Nairobi (LCN) providing logistics support to projects of all MSF sections across East and Central Africa. In November 2006, Martijn joined Oxfam GB as Head of Logistics and Supply in their international headquarters in Oxford. Outside his regular jobs he has been active since 2003 in various aid-sector initiatives on the promotion and development of Humanitarian Logistics a/o as a member of the Advisory Committee that is working with the Fritz Institute and the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport to develop a professional Certification for this field.
